BACK ON THE GREEN AT 87

A GOLF-LOVER’S COMEBACK AFTER MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY

At the age of 87, most people slow down—but not Mr  Narang. A spirited gentleman with a deep passion for golf, Mr. Narang began experiencing severe lower back pain radiating to his left leg. The pain made walking difficult and gradually forced him to give up his favorite activity. Despite his age, Mr. Narang had always led an active lifestyle, and this sudden loss of mobility deeply affected his quality of life.

Determined to regain his independence and return to the golf course, he sought help from Dr. Shankar Acharya, Senior Consultant and Chairman of Spine Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.

The Diagnosis
After a thorough clinical evaluation and imaging studies, Mr. Narang was diagnosed with L4-L5 Spondylolisthesis, a condition where one vertebra slips forward over the one below it, causing nerve compression. In his case, it was accompanied by left lower limb radicular pain, although his neurological functions remained intact.

The Surgery: Minimally Invasive, Maximum Relief
On 6th January 2025, Dr. Shankar Acharya performed a Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF) at the L4-L5 level under general anesthesia. Thanks to the minimally invasive approach, the surgery was performed with smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery time.

Road to Recovery
Postoperatively, Mr. Narang’s pain significantly improved. He was soon mobilized with the help of a brace, and his recovery was smooth. At the time of discharge, he was hemodynamically stable and optimistic about returning to his active life.
He was advised to avoid prolonged sitting, standing, or lifting heavy objects. He was also guided on posture correction, safe movements, and was prescribed a short course of antibiotics, pain medications, and antacids.

Ready to Swing Again

Mr. Narang’s determination, combined with expert surgical care, made this recovery remarkable. He now looks forward to doing what he loves most—playing golf. His case is a testament to how age is just a number when it comes to reclaiming your passion, with the right medical care and spirit.
