Spine problems, especially those involving the cervical spine (neck region), can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. One such condition is cervical cord compression, where pressure on the spinal cord leads to symptoms like pain, tingling, numbness, and even difficulty in walking.
Recently, I had the opportunity to treat a 53-year-old male patient who came to us with severe neck pain, bilateral upper limb radicular pain (more on the left side), and difficulty walking. His condition had been progressively worsening over two months, with signs of cord compression at C3-C4-C5-C6 levels on imaging studies.
On clinical examination, there was evidence of weakness and neurological involvement in both upper and lower limbs. After thorough evaluation and counseling, the patient underwent C3-C4-C5-C6 Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) on 25th April 2025 under general anesthesia. We used implant standalone cage and screws to stabilize the spine.
Outcome of Surgery
Post-surgery, the patient showed remarkable improvement—approximately 70% recovery in symptoms:
- Neck pain and tingling reduced significantly
- Limb power improved
- Patient was able to walk with better balance and confidence
- Post-operative recovery was stable, and he was discharged with proper instructions and support
This case is a strong reminder that timely diagnosis and spine surgery, when indicated, can prevent long-term disability and improve a patient’s mobility and quality of life.
